Headaches happen when the tissues covering the brain and muscles around the scalp and neck cause pain. The brain cannot feel pain itself. Its the network of nerve fibers in the tissues and muscles that sense the pain and aching. They can be chronic, occasional or reoccurring. The amount of pain can vary too from mild to severe. They can get so severe that it disrupts daily life sometimes too.

Headaches that are caused by stress, sneezing, coughing, fever, and muscle tension are called tension headaches. Some conditions that also cause tension headaches are anxiety, depression, arthritis, and joint and bone disorders. Tension headaches are caused by muscles contracting in the neck, scalp and face, they can be severe but they are mostly temporary. The pain is often felt on both sides of the head and also can be joined by nausea, blurred vision, and even vomiting if severe enough. Chronic tension headaches can last weeks even months, they are normally caused by depression and anxiety.

Treatment for tension headaches can be as simple as a hot shower, a massage, or an aspirin. Antidepressants or prescription medication can be helpful too. Other means of relief are relaxation training and herbal supplements.

Migraines usually have severe pain on either both or one side of the scalp. Blurred vision, light sensitivity, and upset stomachs can occur as well. Signs a migraine is coming on are seeing flashing lights, weakness in a limb or limbs, tingling in the face and hands, confusion, speech difficulty, and temporary loss of vision. A migraine attack can last 3 to 4 days and the pain is normally felt in the forehead, temple, ear, jaw, or around the eye. In the time the headache is occurring increased urine and diarrhea can occur.

Stress reduction, elimination of certain foods, regular exercise can prevent migraines from occurring. Cold compresses to the head can be quick relief from a migraine. Pressing on the area of the pain may help as well.
There is also a type of headache that is caused by fever. Pneumonia, mumps, and measles can all cause toxic headaches. Repeated exposure to certain chemicals can also cause a toxic headache. A chemical used in preserving hot dogs, MSG flavor enhancer, and insecticide can all have these headache causing chemicals.
Traction headaches can happen if the muscles on the head and neck are pulled, strained, or stretched. Like squinting your eyes when you need to be wearing glasses or bifocals. Straining eyes tenses the muscles making the headache.

Inflammation headaches are from things like meningitis, sinuses, spine, neck, ear, and teeth problems. Hypertension and brain tumors cause inflammation headaches as well.
