Are you searching for a great family vacation destination this summer? Would you like a vacation that allows you both excitement and relaxation I think you'll love Sherkston Shores near Niagara Falls, Ontario. I've been vacationing there for over 40 years and can't wait for the next time I can get there for a long weekend or week of relaxation and recreation. There is plenty to do within the resort and an amazing selection of activities within short driving distance.
If tanning and swimming are your things, Sherkston's choices are fantastic. First there is the sandy beach and clean water of Lake Erie. Yes, I did use Lake Erie and clean water in the same sentence! This water is so clear that you can see the bottom from a boat in 20 feet of water. You can also enjoy an old stone quarry. This beach is great for the whole family because there is a roped off shallow area for the younger kids and deep water swimming for the adults and older kids. A lifeguard is on duty during normal summer hours.
My dad told me that this was a working stone quarry that struck water and flooded very quickly. He went on to say that there are some very unusual things lying on the bottom of the quarry including a railroad car and some construction machinery. I don't know how much of this tale is true and how much is myth but I'm betting on it all being true. There is a scuba diving club that dives at the far end of the quarry every weekend so there must be something down there worth checking out.
If you just want to kick back and relax, you're going to enjoy the two swimming pools with hot tubs. While you're swimming or lounging, your kids can have fun on the four water slides right near the pools. Your summer home rental package from Sherkston includes unlimited use of the water slides and pools.
Swimming is only the beginning of the fun you can have at Sherkston Shores for the whole family. If you enjoy golf, there is an 18 hole miniature golf course and a nine hole par 3 course (of course there are lots of 18 hole courses within a short drive of the resort. If your kids like, want to play basketball, tennis or hockey, they'll find places to play and other kids to play with. There is also a Main Street area in the resort that has a fully stocked convenience store, an arcade for the kids, a church and a doughnut store (donuts are extremely popular in Canada). Finally, there is a bar/restaurant that has live entertainment and adult beverages for those aged 19 and above.
Sherkston consists mainly of private and rental cottage units. There is also a tent area where your family can rent a campsite for a day, a week or even longer. If you only want to go for the day, there is a daily admission price.
Don't forget that if you're visiting from the United States, you'll need a passport or passport card to return home.
Stay tuned for more parts of this series on Sherkston Shores. In the next part I'm going to tell you about the amazing smallmouth bass fishing in the lake. In future articles, I'll talk about things to do outside Sherkston including my suggestions for visiting Niagara Falls. I've been there many times so I'm always searching for new things to see.
