The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards won't take place until mid-September, but the nominees were just announced and are already causing a stir in the music industry. The battle for VMA princess this year will most certainly be between the new and the reigning, as the bizarre Lady Gaga and the seductive Beyonce Knowles both lead the pack with nine VMA nominations each.
With Gaga taking "Poker Face" to the next level and Knowles causing a YouTube frenzy with "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)," the 2009 VMAs will be all about these two artists and songs, though several other heavy hitters have been nominated for the many categories of the Video Music Awards. While Gaga and Beyonce take the lead, the one and only Britney Spears garnered an admirable seven nods for this year's VMAs while Eminem, Kanye West and Coldplay have all captured four.
As this year marks Lady Gaga's first big rendezvous with the MTV Video Music Awards, the vivacious blonde most certainly had a few words to say about her first nominations. The "Poker Face" queen recently told MTV, "After years of hustle in New York City, where we made our art videos in bars, myself and the Haus of Gaga are honored to receive nine nominations for the 2009 VMAs. We believe in the immensity and the promise of 'showbiz' and will continue to give it mouth-to-mouth till its vomiting return. All you need is a camcorder, a flashlight and one truly great idea. Thank you, MTV, for being our video flagship, and for supporting this bunch of inspired kids, who love to get wasted and make art together."
Lady Gaga is up for Video of the Year, the big whopper of the night, for her hit song "Poker Face," and she will compete for the top prize against Kanye West's "Love Lockdown," Eminem's "We Made You," Britney Spears' "Womanizer" and Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)." Gaga's "Poker Face" is also up for Best New Artist, Best Female Video and Best Pop Video, while her hit single "Paparazzi" has been nominated for Best Direction, Best Editing, Best Special Effects, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.
The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards promises explosive content this year, and not just because Lady Gaga is one of the two leading ladies up for awards. This year's VMAs will also spice things up a bit with a category titled Best Video (That Should Have Won a Moonman,) and several classic artists are up for this award, including U2 ("Where the Streets Have No Name"), Dr. Dre ("Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang"), Bjork ("Human Behavior"), Radiohead ("Karma Police"), George Michael ("Freedom"), Foo Fighters ("Everlong"), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ("Into the Great Wide Open"), OK Go ("Here It Goes Again") and David Lee Roth ("California Girls").
The VMAs will once again be hosted by comedian Russell Brand, and performers for the big night already include Green Day, Pink, Taylor Swift and Muse. Though she may or may not be performing at the '09 VMAs, Gaga lovers can still see the blonde bombshell perform live with Lady Gaga tickets, available now online.
