Most athletes use stretching exercise just before an event, and not any other exercise. This is because other exercises are tiring and demands the use of a lot of energy, the energy that should better be saved up for the actual competition. The stretching exercises help remove rigidity out of the muscles, it makes the body flexible but more importantly, it pumps the blood into the muscles amplifying both the metabolism productivity and removal of wastes from the muscle sites.

These same advantages are derived from stretching exercises when incorporated in the bodybuilding regimen. It is very important that the body builder start out with stretching exercises before moving on to the weight exercises. It will help prepare the muscles fro the tougher and more demanding training, by increasing muscle elasticity, body flexibility and a general boost in circulation. If a body builder takes to the weights immediately after entering the gym,, the muscles will revolt and probably get injured since they are very rigid, stout and inelastic.

In a bodybuilding perspective, stretching exercises cannot be taken as a training routine by themselves. If you decide to leave out a whole training session for stretching exercises, you will be delimiting body gains in muscle mass and strength, and then getting not much in return from the stretching. But if they are incorporated into the training routine as a daily exercises and given less than ten minutes at the very begin of the workout, then they will become an essential part of the bodybuilding routine. In essence therefore, stretching exercises should be thought of as warm up exercises for body builders and not useful by themselves in a muscle venture, but crucial as a preparatory stage to weight training.

Even in athletics, football, tennis and other conventional sports, the players are mandated and obligated to perform stretching exercises every before they start a training session or before playing an important game. The amount of time spent in the stretching exercises is less than ten minutes in most cases, because the only gain from stretching is the chance to flex and move muscles as a preparatory phase that precedes more complicated, demanding and strenuous movements. Physiologists usually discourage body builders from stretching for more than 8 - 10 minutes since the stretches will then tire the body and exhaust the muscles to an extent that can negatively impact on the main workout.

As a body builder, it is important that you include stretching exercises as part of your daily warm up regime. And when you incorporate them in the session, regard them only as stepping-stones to you workout and not as a part of the workout themselves. It advisable that you give stretching exercises as little time as 5 minutes only, preferably at the very onset of the training session. This will help you'reap double benefits since you will increase you general body flexibility, elasticity and fitness and then amplify the gains from weight training workouts since the muscles will always be at their optimal performance.
