Quitting Smoking For Good

Smoking is not only a disgusting habit, but it is a habit that can kill you if you don't get a handle on it and quit immediately. Have you ever seen a picture of what a smoker s lungs look like& #8203; compared to the lungs belonging to a healthy person? The difference is like night and day (literally). The smoker s lungs are black and caked in gunk, while the non smoker s lungs are not. Additionally, have you ever dated a smoker? If not, it s like hugging and kissing a human ashtray.

There are many people who are actually allergic to cigarette smoke. I am one of them. Every time I smell cigarette smoke, it makes me choked up and almost instantly nauseous. When I go home to visit with friends, I have one friend who started smoking when she was around twelve years old and who is still smoking more than a decade later. It is difficult to admit this at times, but while I like my friend as a person, I do not respect nor appreciate her disgusting habits. Quite frankly, there have been times in the past when I avoided hanging out with her entirely based on the fact that she was a smoker. You see, when you smoke, the smell of the smoke doesn't just go away once you put the cigarette out. Instead, the cigarette smoke permeates throughout everything that you wear, own or touch. Even if you are in the car with someone who is smoking and supposedly blowing it out the window, it doesn't stop you from smelling it.

There was one time when I was volunteering at the library. I was organizing books as people were dropping them off in the library book drop when suddenly I picked up a bunch of books that all smelled like cigarette smoke. The smell was sickening, and after I shelved the books, I quickly went and washed my hands. Cigarette smoke gets into your hair, your clothing, and it affects those around you who do not smoke. I used to enjoy going to dance clubs on occasion with my friends but eventually stopped because it was simply too smoky. I would get upset because prior to going out, I would wash my hair and put on fresh clothes only to go into an establishment and come out smelling like I was covered head to toe in cigarette smoke. On top of that, it was making me have difficulty breathing.

Sometimes I think that cigarette smokers are some of the most intolerable, inconsiderate people because of their bad smoking habits. There is nothing worse than talking to someone who is smoking and blowing the smoke back directly towards your face. On top of this, smoking doesn't only affect the person who is actively smoking. Rather, it affects the non smokers around them and puts them at risk as well for developing cancer. For instance, there have been many studies done that have linked second hand smoke to cancer in non smokers. Pretty scary thought, huh? If smokers choose to kill themselves and/or put their bodies at risk, that is their choice. However, when someone else s smoking habit begins to affect those who have otherwise lead healthy lives but are now at risk for developing cancer from second hand smoke, that s quite another thing entirely.
