Addiction mainly refers to dependency on a behaviour or sub-substance that a person is unable to stop. The fact that most people are unaware of is that it is an advancing syndrome, which implies that it exacerbates over time.

The most widely known addiction is substance addiction and most of the people are aware of this type of addiction. There are substances, which are more addictive as compared to the others in the sense that they cause changes in mood, and behaviour, more abruptly, and the withdrawal symptoms are more problematic.

Alcoholism comes under substance abuse, and an addiction to alcohol is considered as one of the most common addictions. Alcohol is widely available at most places, even where it is illegal or unlawful. Although many countries that do not have bans on alcohol, have age limits; however, getting access to it is not always an issue. Prolonged and excessive use can lead to addiction. Negative consequences of alcohol include impairment of his/her ability to function normally or drive etc. Therefore, consuming excessive amounts of liquor can make a person irrational, and eventually lead to accidents, and crimes involving violence, and abuse.

If alcohol is used for longer period, then a person becomes addict to it. However, there are many negative effects of alcohol not only regarding your health, but it also affects your social standing as well. Excessively using alcohol may lead to unconsciousness, which may become a cause of several crimes, and abusive acts. It may lead to the moral decline.

When one refers to substance addiction, the first thing that usually comes to mind is drugs, which is a very common form of substance addiction. This can include legal drugs such as medication obtained via a prescription, or illegal drugs that are not supposed to be available.

Substance addiction may also include the addiction, which results due to the long-term use of prescription drugs. However, there are several drugs, which are not legally recommended and cause addiction.

Another most common type of addiction is of food. People do not consider it as an addiction, but it is rapidly increasing. It is also referred as process addiction. Food is the fundamental requirement of every individual, and is needed for his survival indeed. On the other hand, if the consumed amount of food goes beyond the required amount, then it is known as bulimia. It eventually results in obesity. People eat food as a substitute, or for suppressing their emotional disorders. The withdrawal symptoms are quite intense, such as anorexia and cravings. Another addiction is known to be internet addiction. It is in fact a psychological dependence. When a person is not having the facility of internet, he feels impulsive, and longs for internet. Internet has many useful aspects but if it is used regularly, it may cause psychological dependence. These mentioned types are the most commonly observed addictions. You can get rid of these addictions with the help of rehabilitation centres.
