Perfumes are of various types - not only in terms of their scent, but also in composition. This is one fact that we are not aware of. Fragrances have been divided into 2 types and are characterized by the differences in the making of the same. It primarily deals with the basic ingredients present in typical perfumes, its concentrations and other essential factors.

It isn't really essential for you to know the fragrance types in order to enjoy the perfumes. However, it might help you in choosing the appropriate fragrance according to your taste and personality.

There are 3 major steps of to formulate fragrances. These steps are categorized as notes. There are three basic notes divided as Top, Middle and Base notes.

Top note is basically the first scent of the perfume that you sniff. It is usually light and quite volatile, thus spreading easily. It gives a fresh feeling. Top notes include scents of the floral categories, such as lemon, bergamot, grapefruit, mint, pine, galbanum and others.

Middle notes enhance the fragrance when the top notes tend to bled with them. This is often called the heart of fragrance. Middle notes are basically the dominant fragrances that keep the scent alive for long. These are further used for classifying the fragrance families into woody, oriental and floral fragrances.

Base notes make for the underlying fragrance tones that give it a long-lasting appeal. This particular note is made from the less volatile ingredients that include vanilla, rare wood and amber.

All these different notes make the traditional fragrances and it is very important to maintain the transition of these notes in order to create a harmonious blend of the ingredients. In the recent times however, another type of fragrance has evolved that doesn't have any discarnate transition. These fragrances have a typical vertical formulation and a single note.

The formulation of perfumes is something that we should know, and also its reaction with the body when worn. This actually allows you to test the fragrances before you actually buy the same. What we usually do is take sniff. This is the only way to get the scent. But is it enough? Not really! In order to develop an understanding of the fragrance, you must sniff time and again. You can never decide on a perfume by sniffing just once. In fact, it is now being said that one should take time and choose the best perfume by developing an understanding of the scent.
