What is addiction? Generally, people understand addiction to be "hooked on drugs", but it is much more than just that. Addiction can be caused by prescribed medicine, coffee, television, and even shopping. Do you feel that you are turning into an addict? Ask yourself if you can give up this addiction for a day, a week, a month, a year, or forever. If you cannot, then you are becoming addicted to "the thing".

Or to observe more closely, some warning signs of addiction are dramatic mood swings (for example shifting from extremely happy mood to sad, in a short time span), change in personal habits (for example a neat freak turns into a complete slob). Other changes include change in interests (for example loosing interest in long time hobbies), change of company, legal difficulties, missing time at work, becoming physically, or verbally abusive and social isolation.

It can be overcome by regaining power. Several people are unable to give up addiction, because they believe themselves to be powerless to the situation, which is not true. With a strong will power, you can change yourself, and your habits. The process maybe slow and painful, but once the goal is achieved, it provides great satisfaction. Another way is to look for spiritual support. Hang on to religion, as faith restores sanity, and helps with the healing process.

Addiction can only be given up if the patient is determined, and believes in the achievement, and does not lose hope during the process, which can sometimes be a prolonged one.

Also, clean out your closet, and do not keep any secrets. Stop hiding your addiction because of shame, and face yourself, and the world. List your bad habits, qualities, and addictions that you want to give up. Writing helps, so write down your inventory.

Group discussion in these things help a lot, there are professional groups of drug addicts, alcoholics, shopaholics, gamblers, etc. to help you out with your bad habits. One can always depend upon family members, best friends, spouse to help give up the addiction.

People supporting you might not be addict of the same thing, but nonetheless family is pivotal support in giving up any kind of addiction, it also brings conviction in your decisions.

A long time of addiction also freezes certain positive feelings of a person. Once the healing process begins, the frozen feelings start to thaw. In addition, once you feel it, start once again, and take time to understand your lost feelings, and emotions, and your reactions to those emotions. It helps you to work more strongly to get rid of your addiction. Otherwise, medically acupuncture helps in giving up long term addictions. In short, do not become a slave of habit. Try to explore new possibilities, make plans for the future, look for new experiences; after all, you only get to live once.
