Once puberty hits, all sorts of changes start to happen in the body. Hair starts growing in new places, parts start spreading and the face and skin begins to change. At about this time is when the hormones start to kick in. Underneath the skin begins to change and acne begins to form. Acne is not curable but with different acne treatments, acne can be controlled and in most cases, cleared up.

Acne will affect just about everyone in their lifetime. The extent of how bad the acne is will vary by person but there is a treatment out there for everyone. Acne does not have a cure but the treatments for acne will reduce the effect and clear up the face. The only trouble will be to find which treatment is best for you.

Benzoyl peroxide is a treatment that is safe for both children and adults. This is used most often on mild acne. This goes right to the bacteria that causes acne and will kill it off before it can make its appearance on the face. This will also clear out the pores and keep them fresh and clean. This option may take a few weeks to start to work but it needs to be continued to keep the face clear. If it is stopped, the bacteria will come back and the face will again break out.

Salicylic acid is one way to help fight mild acne. This can be found in many different forms such as lotions, creams, alcohol-based solutions and medicated pads. This acid will work to get rid of the dead skin cells and helps with new growth. This also helps to unclog pores. A few side effects from this type of treatment are mild dryness and irritation. This treatment will take a bit to kick in and must be continued to keep the face clean. If the treatment is stopped, the face will go back to the way it was before.

If acne is moderate to severe, a dermatologist can prescribe antibiotics. To get these antibiotics, you will need to see your doctor who will do a skin exam. These antibiotics will most commonly be either a pill that is taken orally or a cream that is applied to the skin. The antibiotics will stop the body from producing the bacteria that causes acne. Antibiotics will take a bit to kick in but once they begin to work, they will need to be continued or the acne-causing bacteria will begin to grow once again.

Oral contraceptives are another type of prescription that can be obtained to fight acne. If your acne is thought to be caused by your hormones, birth control pills may work. Birth control pills control hormones and will keep them in line. A doctor will have to do an exam for you to receive these pills.

Herbal treatments are out there for people who want to try the natural route. These can be supplements, teas, oils or creams. Check with your doctor before taking any of these because herbal treatments may interact with your current medications. Laser treatments are a new treatment that is being studied. It is still in the testing phase so it will hopefully be another treatment in the future.

Acne is a common problem among teens and adults alike. As much of a problem as it is, there are many different ways to treat this problem and keep the acne under control.
