Yesterday's forms of entertainment were found in watching television, listening to the radio or watching DVDs. The generation of today demands more than just watching or listening. What they want is a more interactive form of entertainment, which is now made possible through video game systems.

If you were born in the 80's, then you probably experienced playing Super Nintendo during your younger years. Street Fighter, Grand Turismo and of course The Super Mario Brothers are just a few of the more familiar games of those times. While today's youth are hooked on playing their PlayStations, Microsoft X-Box and Nintendo Wii.

What is the real difference between the video game systems of yesterday and the present time? Probably the best answer to that is interactivity. The old school gaming consoles required the use of a joystick as the only medium to interact with another player in the game or to explore the virtual world that they were playing. Today, video game systems require more than just the joystick that we used to use. Now, there are far other accessories and gadgets needed depending on the type of gaming console that you have. Besides using your fingers, most of today's video games involve the use of arms and legs to be able to play the game properly.

The good part is that a player is not considered a 'couch potato' anymore. He is active as he is executing various body movements for the sake of playing the video game that he prefers. In fact, Nintendo Wii even offers some video games that promote physical activities as well. So not only are you enjoying the game, you are also exercising your body at the same time.

The fact that video game systems of today have been made more interactive makes them more attractive than ever to kids. Kids as young as 4 years old already know how to play video games. Graphics wise, these video game systems are incredible in that they are able to portray the characters as if they are real. More and more audiences from different generations have become more interested in playing. They use them as part of their entertainment, playing with their friends or playing while bonding with children.

Most of these video game systems are user friendly so that even a 4 year old can understand how to use them. Parents should be cautious with what games their kids are playing by making sure that they are suitable for their age. Games which show violence should not be played by younger kids because it may affect their way of life later on. Even though these games are created not for the purpose of introducing violence, but mainly for entertainment purposes, still, parents should be responsible enough by controlling which games are appropriate and not appropriate for their children.
