Everyone deserves to enjoy the delight and whimsy of Halloween. A great outfit can always be found regardless of your budget, and decorations for your home don't need to break the bank. Costume shops surface around September, and costumes for children and adults are generally the most topical. If you want a fully inclusive costume package, including wig, jewelry, accessories, they can be the best place to shop.
However, they aren't the only places. There are also a number of year round resources you can use to create a great costume on your own. Army surplus stores are a wealth of creative opportunities, selling military gear at incredible discounts. It can take a bit of time scoping things out since it is generally a warehouse type of environment, but the costume potential is well worth the effort.
Party stores are no longer simply for colored plates and invitations. Here you can find an assortment of inexpensive scene setters such as large, plastic wall hangings that can turn a room into everything from a rat infested dungeon to a 50s malt shop. They stock items for events throughout the year such as Mardi Gras, Saint Patrick's Day, and Cinco de Mayo. A customer with a keen eye can pick up deeply discounted sale items to use for their Halloween costume later in the year.
Why invent the wheel when someone has already done it for you? Local, nonprofit community theater groups will often rent out costumes they have made for past performances. Sometimes they will have an annual costume sale to make space for the costumes of the upcoming performance season. Look in the newspaper or on the theater website for these events.
Hobby and art shops are great resources for finding decorations for your home and yard. They sell silk flowers in every color imaginable, raw materials such as cloth and filling material. There are even structures you can build and decorate for pennies. Feel free to add your own memorable touches.
Perhaps you don't want to spend any money on a costume. All you need to do is to look in your own closet. Everyone from kindergarten to corporate love to dress up and be someone else for the day, and you can build a costume from your wardrobe that will be appropriate for any environment. A long black coat, some sunglasses and some red and blue candy and you step into The Matrix.
Everyday jeans paired with a vest, bandana, and a few inexpensive accessories from the toy department, can transport you back to the wild, wild west. Even a simple long skirt and ruffled blouse will go far in emulating your favorite 18th century author, without breaking the bank at all. Halloween may not be everyday, but it can be one of the most fun days. With a little planning, your budget will remain intact and the spirit of Halloween won't slip away without you.
