Over the last two decades, smaller and smaller notebooks have been developed with the same or higher levels of computing power. Netbooks are at the bottom end of that range, with low prices, smaller sizes and yet capable computing ability. The range of sizes is significant, even though they were originally intended to be only the smallest and cheapest of the portable computers.

Although miniature notebooks have been around in theory since the mid 1990s, they have only been sustainable since 2007. The original devices were intended to provide ultra portable computers to users. They achieved the goal, but gave up some features in order to produce the tiny unit. Optical drivers were not part of original computers. The keyboard was approximately 85 percent of the standard size keyboard. Screens ranged from 5 inches to just over 10 inches in size. The size distinction has largely disappeared between the various portable computers.

Original models were very inexpensive. Some were offered at no charge when the buyer signed up for extended service contracts. With a wireless card, the internet ready models were intended to be used as a companion to another computer. Because of the increased size and computing power, the mini notebooks are regularly used as the only computer. They are particularly effective for students.

These efficient devices are changing the market for personal computers. Because of their computing power, they are able to accomplish most of the computing needs for a majority of computer users today. They are more efficient than personal computers were only eight years ago.

The operating systems and usable software in mini notebooks are often different than that of personal computers. Size and cost constraints have forced development of new technology. As minis become more popular, manufacturers are finding that modifying existing software for personal computers is wiser than phasing out older software and systems.

Developing countries are buying low cost mini notebooks in large numbers. Because the minis are so low in price, they are capturing an increasing proportion of the market in 1st world countries as well. The number of models are increasing in the marketplace, so more competition helps to keep the prices down, while allowing more customers to buy.

Netbooks are expected to remain at competitive prices due to continued popularity. Many individuals can afford minis where higher priced models would not be affordable. New models are continually being developed which add additional features.
