These days, just about every household has a printer. They're inexpensive now, smaller in size, and most printers do multi-functions like having the ability to print, fax, scan, and do color pictures, all in one.
One plus is some of them now have the ability to scan slides and negatives, for those wishing to preserve their old photos. Another is that lots of printers these days are going wireless, so they don't have to be connected to a computer anymore and can be in any part of the room or even another room, out of sight.
Just about all of them also have the ability to make good quality color prints, as good as a photo lab. Those with a color printer that prints photos won't have to go to a photo lab for prints if they don't want to. The only drawback is the ink will need frequent replacing and paper will need to be bought. Ink can be pricey but it varies from each machine. Some may use toner as well.
However, most household printers are made so that only inks or photo cartridges need replacing. There's also re-manufactured cartridges, but they may not perform as well in your machine than if you were to buy the brand specified. Another tip is when printing photos, it's always a good idea to use the same brand paper as the printer so that it works to its full potential.
Before committing to buy though, do a little research first. Examine your needs and then narrow it down from there to find the right printer. For example, some need a printer for their home business, and would do well with an all in one that prints, faxes, and can make copies.
Still other may want to largely use theirs for their photo collection. They'll probably want one that does high quality color photos, and the ability to scan negatives and old photos to archive their prints into a collection.
And others just need a basic home printer that can print documents when needed, such as directions, personal documents, and emails. There are printers that do just the basic functions and a little more that are great for home use.
Printers right now are very economical whether you're using it in home or business. Of course, there are costly printers that do the job with high quality performance, but they're more for those who need a specific job professionally done, such as a photographer or graphic designer who needs very high quality prints done or large images such as banner size.
