Compressed Natural Gas is more commonly known as CNG for short. This is a fuel that does not pollute the environment as much as Diesel or gasoline do. In fact, the pollution by CNG is negligible and is fast becoming the alternative to conventional fuel for vehicles. Thousands of people are installing CNG conversion kits every day in an effort to save some cash and with it the environment. CNG conversion kits are becoming a tool for green-peace movements the world over.
Natural gas is a substitute for liquid fuel such as petrol and Diesel oil commonly used to run vehicles the world over. However, these two fuels are fast being depleted with the rate of consumption going higher and higher and with the consumption the cost fo the fuel is also rising out of the reach of the common man.
Natural gas is a compound that is organically formed over millions of years of high pressure due to the geological changes in the earth. Compressed natural gas is mostly made of hydrogen and carbon called methane. This is one of the safest fuels that is used for domestic cooking, lighting and heating purposes and now it is being used to power vehicles with the help of CNG conversion kits.
Natural gas needs to be pumped into a gas tank specially designed to withstand the high pressure of the gas. This gas is stored under high pressure in the vehicle because it is important to compress a large amount of gas into a small tank in order to give the vehicle a larger range. Many people fear an explosion but they cannot be more wrong. It is more dangerous to keep a tank full of liquid fuel compared to a tank full of compressed natural gas.
When the CNG leaves the tank it is cold and semi-liquid. This state has to be changed in order for the gas to combust in the chamber. In order to vaporize the gas completely the gas from the tank is fed into a diaphragm chamber that is hooked up with the engine cooling system through water pipes.
When fuel is pumped to the injection point of the engine it needs to be vaporized first. This process is called 'atomizing' ' turning the liquid into a gas. When CNG is used to power a vehicle this vaporizing is eliminated because it is already in a semi-liquid form.
The CNG conversion kits consist of a gas tank, a vaporizer, water pipes to circulate hot water from the engine around the diaphragm in the vaporizer, and a solenoid switch to change over from CNG to liquid fuel. When the gas leaves the tank it expands immediately and so it changes into a semi-liquid because this sudden change in pressure lowers the temperature drastically. The gas enters the leather diaphragm that is heated with the hot water on the outside vaporizing the gas instantly. This gas enters the engine through the carburetor and powers the engine.
Converting to CNG is easy and convenient by installing on of the branded CNG conversion kits however it may be mandatory in some states to seek written permission to do so from the relevant department. Whatever the red tape it is worthwhile to switch to CNG from Diesel or petrol.
