Lake Lanier is a reservoir found in the state of Georgia. In 1956, it was formed from the completion of the Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River. There are over 35, 000 acres of water and almost seven hundred miles of shoreline. Though its main functions are to provide flood control for the city of Atlanta and hydroelectricity, it has become a haven for fishermen, jet skiers, canoeists, houseboats and recreational boaters.

The lake is widely known to offer a great breeding area for multiple species of fish. It is unique in that cold water is supplied from under the Buford Dam thus supporting the spawning of various species of trout including rainbow, broke and brown trout. The region is plentifully stocked by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Trout are not the only species of fish found in this lake. Anglers looking for bass will not be disappointed. Two species indigenous to the lake are the striped bass and the white bass. There are seven members of the sunfish family common to the lake. Two of the most popular for fishing are the black crappie and the largemouth bass. Members of the gar, perch and catfish families can also be found swimming here.

Lanier is known throughout the fishing community as a great place for catching fish year round. A fishing excursion to the lake can be successful pretty much any month of the year. The best overall months to fish here are usually March, April and May. Some fish are better caught during specific seasons than others. For instance, January and February are the best time to try your hand at reeling in a few striped bass.

Those with a competitive spirit will have little difficulty satisfying their wish to try to win a fishing tournament. Tournaments are held frequently and are often sponsored by either local commercial enterprises or by local and/or national charities. Those willing to ante up the entry fee (usually between $50 and $100), can in some cases, not only walk away with a trophy for having caught the biggest fish, but can also pocket a large monetary award.

In addition to fishing, the lake provides a wide variety of other fun activities. When the fishing is done, a visitor may choose to play a round of golf at one of several beautiful courses on the shore or near the lake. Campers and hikers will also find plenty of options for adventure. Buford Dam Trail is among the top hiking selections and any number of camp sites can be found along the shore and nearby.
