Ever since Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3 dropped in 2009, fans of the hip-hop heavyweight have been waiting for him to tour in support of the third installation of his Blueprint series, and he did on Feb. 20. Jay-Z opened the North American leg of his tour at Miami's BankAtlantic Center with special guest Young Jeezy and opening act Trey Songz. The start-studded first date on Jay-Z's BP3 tour featured New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez as well as vocalists Diddy and Beyonce in the audience, according to the Miami Herald. Hip-hop fans and stars alike are sure to turn up to see Jay-Z on his current tour, so act now to get Jay-Z tickets online.
Donning an all-black ensemble complete with a black baseball cap, Jay-Z took the stage with a 10-piece band, beginning the show with his hit single "Run This Town." Live horns augmented songs like "Roc Boys" and singer Bridget Kelly filled in for Alicia Keys on Jay-Z's recent (and also his first) No. 1 hit single "Empire State of Mind," during which images of the famous New York City skyline were displayed on a massive screen. MTV News reports that Hov was giving the performance his all-so much so that he began to lose his voice later on in his set! The horn section was muted during "D.O.A." and "Show Me What You Got"-chalk it up to it being the first night of the tour-but fans didn't seem to notice!
Young Jeezy took the stage for half an hour during the middle of Jay-Z's set, likely giving his vocals a much-needed rest, and then the pair performed their collaboration "My President," penned in honor of President Obama. The politically-minded song features the lyrics, "Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk/ Martin Luther walked so Barack Obama could run/ Barack Obama ran so all the children could fly/ So I'mma spread my wings/ You could meet me in the sky." After capping off the performance with a rendition of "Encore," Jay-Z told the crowd, "I'm not jaded, I appreciate every one of you being here."
The Brooklyn native will remain on the road through the end of March, stopping in cities like Dallas, Texas; New Orleans, La.; East Rutherford, N.J.; Boston, Mass.; Auburn Hills, Mich.; Chicago, Ill.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Los Angeles, Calif. and more before wrapping up with a headlining performance at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, Calif. in mid-April. Jay-Z will also perform at another major music festival - Bonnaroo, in Manchester, Tenn. - in June.
Although Jay-Z has a busy next couple of months, he may have to soon clear his schedule for a trip to the White House. MTV News reports that in an interview with the BBC, Jay-Z revealed that he has been invited to the presidential palace a few times but hasn't been yet, adding, "Hopefully we'll keep him in for eight years, so I'll have time to get there." Jay-Z was a passionate supporter of Obama during his presidential campaign and the president is reportedly a fan of Hov's music. During his BBC interview Jay-Z said, "Barack loves hip-hop. When I called him he was playing [The] Blueprint in the gym." Who knows, maybe President Obama will stop by a concert on Jay-Z's current tour?
