When one makes the decision to go into a mental health field as a career there are many options available. The individual opting for this career should be dedicated to helping others in difficult situations, be prepared for life long learning and a dedication to commitment. Some psychiatry jobs are more intense than others and there is a difference in working as a psychologist and as a psychiatrist.

Becoming a doctor is possible in both fields, the difference as a psychiatrist they are a medical doctor and a psychologist could have a doctorate degree. The doctorate degree could be either a PhD or a PsyD; however, they are not licensed to practice medicine. Both will have their specializations relating to psychology and both have a specific type of psychology they prefer to utilize in their practice.

When someone specializes in children they are known as a child psychologist or psychiatrist. Their primary clients are children and families of the children they see. Should someone consider this extremely popular field it is important to take into consideration that often times the families may be difficult to deal with. If there is a case with a child being seen due to abuse for example, the clinician needs to be very open minded to the family situation. They cannot be bias or blaming; this is often difficult for many in the field of treating children.

Specializing in sports psychology requires the ability to help clients involved in various sports. Situations may include them having difficulties in controlling their temper during an event or they become overwhelmed with pressure to always play well, the issues could widely vary.

Working in a criminal or forensic field is not what a majority of people think of it as being. It is not like a movie where the client is a serial murderer, though in a forensic field a client such as this may come across occasionally. The forensic field requires many different aspects, they will sometimes be used to determine the mental capacity of someone claiming an insanity plea or they may be called to conduct some testing. The clients will vary. In a criminal capacity, they are more likely to be concerned with determining what the root problem to committing the crime was.

To be a psychiatrist requires a lot of education. Starting with a bachelors degree in science, another four years of medical school, an internship followed by residency. After all of the years of school is a state board examination which they must pass in order to be licensed. They are licensed to practice medicine.

As medical doctors they do have the authority to prescribe medications. A doctor of psychology cannot prescribe medications. Many people think a psychiatrist simply writes a prescription without having concerns about treating the patient. This is far from the truth. They do prescribe medications; however, they are concerned with treatment. Not all patients have the same symptoms, if a patient is diagnosed with bipolar disorder, this does not mean their symptoms are exactly like another patients. A psychiatrist will differentiate the symptoms and treat each.

For someone to say they want to get psychiatry jobs is not a simple process. This form of a medical career takes years of hard work, commitment and determination. These individuals are medical doctors and have studied side by side with the same individual doing surgery or repairing a broken bone, they simply chose to specialize in psychology.
