Finding the right tattoo artist is just as important as finding the right tattoo. They are going to be the ones applying it, and if they don't do a good job, you are the one who has to live with it in the end. In order to find the right tattoo artist, there are some helpful tips and advice. Just like picking the right tattoo, finding a good tattoo artist requires patience. If you live in a smaller community, where there are just not that many shops, it may require you to expand your horizons and look elsewhere if you are not satisfied with what is available in your community.

One of the places you can start is by talking with friends or family who may have recently had a tattoo placed on their own body. Certainly, they are going to be able to recommend someone, and will tell you right away if the person they used was to their satisfaction. This doesn't necessarily mean that the same person is right for you, but it can be a good place to start from.

Another thing to consider is don't judge a book by it's cover. A tattoo artist is not going to be someone who is wearing a suit, and they may not look like what you would describe as 'desirable.' this does not mean they aren't good, and the first place you should look one the person is by the body illustrations they themselves are sporting. In many cases, artists often practice on themselves, and some prefer to only put their best work on their own bodies. If you are visiting a large, well established shop, they may also be sporting a tattoo put on by someone else who works there as well.

No matter what the shop looks like, or the people who work there, there are things that you need to be on the look out for. Any respectable shop will never under any circumstances reuse needles or tips, and the area where they work will always be need and tidy. It has to be this way, because they want to get the job done right the first time, and not spend a lot of time searching for the materials and equipment they need.

Definitely ask a lot of questions. Ask about how much experience they have, their license, insurance, and look through their portfolio for examples of their previous customers. Any good tattooist will probably have a following, and these people may be hanging out just to see their favorite artist performing. A lot of people hanging out around a tattoo parlor is a good sign that this place does a lot of business.

The most important thing really, after all the other things check out is that your are comfortable with the person, and they make you feel relaxed. A tattoo is going to hurt no matter where you have it put, but a good artist can talk you through it, and take your mind off the pain. In many cases, they will start to BS with you, get you to be more relaxed, and before you know it, it's all done. One important thing. A tattoo can be expensive, and you have to make sure that it isn't about the money, if you really want one, you should be willing to pay the price.
