Successful businesses have found that incentives programs are an excellent way to encourage employees to go beyond the requirements of a job. They are the oil that keeps things running smoothly. Everyone likes to be appreciated when putting in extra effort or doing something above the ordinary. Using this method makes for a pleasant working atmosphere and happy employees.

Employee attitude means the difference between a job well done or just time put in. If they feel they are appreciated, there is willingness to put in all the time necessary to do a good job. This is readily apparent in an office or a business where there are no incentive or merit programs. The attitude of the employee when answering the phone or greeting a customer at the counter makes it readily apparent if they like their job or feel recognized for their efforts.

A company needs to recognize that each employee is an individual and that individual has special needs. One of these needs is the recognition of a job well done. Many a new employee who comes in full of enthusiasm quickly loses interest and does not step forward to offer suggestions that might be very beneficial for the company. Job incentives will keep this good employee motivated and encourage him or her to put forth extra effort to show they deserve recognition.

There are many different types of incentive programs being used throughout the business community. Smart business people treat these programs as any other investment to increase the retaining of key personnel and promote company business. Implementing employee rewards and recognition is a strategic tool that works well within an organization. Many places that have "Employee of the Month" posters. This displays to the public, fellow employees and the employee themselves that their work is recognized and appreciated.

Incentive contests are an excellent idea for companies wishing to encourage their employees to do better work. Having a yearlong contest may have some more or less forgetting about it so shorter lengths of time are encouraged. Things to benefit the company such as the number of new customers brought in or completing the most reports are just a couple of the things that might be used.

In large companies sometimes the incentive is a weekend vacation at a resort, a trip or some other such large award. This is usually used where high sales result in a large number of customers or sales and increase the company's overall business structure. In this case, the 'contest' or incentive is well advertised at the beginning so everyone has a chance by starting from an even field.

Many large companies have used incentive contests to motivate their employees for years. Usually these concern things that bring in a large amount of money or customers and increase the business contacts as well as being profitable. Contests such as this have large rewards such as a trip, weekend vacation or other desirable remuneration. In the end, this has paid off very well and has brought in many rewards for the company.

On occasion, a company has a supervisor or personnel person who rules with an iron hand and often does not believe in incentive programs. Employees resent this type of person and it is soon reflected in their work production. If such a person exists in a company, they should either be replaced or retrained. It is important to keep the workflow going in a smooth and happy manner and this can be done with a little planning.
