Because of Lagos' strategic position in the south west of Portugal, the region changed hands several times as different cultures recognized its importance with regards to naval practices. Then in 1755 Lagos was subjected to a severe earthquake, but of course, it once again managed to survive and bounce back. These are of course not the only disasters the region has faced during its long colorful history, but on each occasion, Lagos has managed to pull through.

Location: Lagos is nearly the most southwestern tip of Portugal and is accessible by car, boat or train. Located 75 kilometers from the Faro International Airport, you can drive to Lagos or take the train from Lisbon. In addition there are a variety of bus lines connecting Lagos to surrounding towns and cities. Even though it is not as centrally located as some other cities in Portugal, Lagos is easy to get to and this makes it a popular choice for those interested in purchasing property in the area.

Stable Economy: Not only is the local economy stable, but it's also prospered tremendously due to the recent tourism boom, and by all accounts, the trend looks set to continue. This increasing popularity has led to a huge demand for property in Lagos, and as a result property investment has become a lucrative business opportunity.

Small Town Atmosphere: The town center of Lagos is quaint and attractive, and even though it has grown to accommodate the vast numbers of tourists who visit each year, it has managed to retain the feel of a small town with individual character. Several areas of the town center have been designated pedestrian only areas, and others are still encircled by the remains of an ancient medieval wall. A wide variety of small boutiques, cafes and restaurants all add to the unique charm of Lagos.

Stunning Geography: Some of the most beautiful coastline is to be found in Lagos. A short trip from the Praia de Dona Ana will take you to the Ponta da Piedade which is a stunning rock formation thrust out of the turquoise waters of the sea. Easily viewed by land, this unique coastline is best seen from boat. In addition, there area a variety of caves in the area which add to the mystique of natural pillars, arches, gateways and overhangs. This unusual coastal geography lures many nature lovers to the area and adds a kind of natural charm to those looking to purchase property in Lagos.

No Shortage of Activities: Irrespective of whether you're a tourist or a resident, Lagos has an abundance of activities to suit all tastes. There's parasailing, dolphin watching tours, a zoo, museums, galleries, golf courses, horse riding, and so much more. And, if a hectic daytime schedule is not enough to wear you out then you'll be pleased to know that the city explodes into life when the sun goes down. From street entertainers to a huge variety of pubs to restaurants to nightclubs, there's always something to do and somewhere to go.

Beaches: In Portuguese the word "praia" means beach, and Lagos has no lack of beautiful ones. The most popular, and populated beach in Lagos is the Praia Dona Ana with plenty of parking and the nearby cliffs afford a level of shade that is not found in some of the other beaches. The Praia do Camilo is another beach, but this one is secluded and less popular with the tourists. Jewel like waters are serene off the coast of this beach, and you can pass through a natural rock tunnel to reach another beach. This particular beach is a great beach for snorkeling.

Golf: Like many other parts of the Algarve, golf is as important to the resident of Lagos as it is to the visitor. The golf courses around Lagos take advantage of stunning scenery and incorporate natural vistas of the ocean, cliffs and rolling green hills that provide a beautiful backdrop to a round of golf.

Buy to Let: Purchasing property in Lagos with the aim to supplement an income with the rental of a second home is popular in Lagos and there are a variety of management companies which will look after your property for you. Unlike other areas of the Algarve, Lagos seems to attract a large number of long term renters who are perhaps wintering in Lagos rather than the cold of northern Europe. Purchasing property to rent it has the added benefit of providing accommodation for your own visits to Lagos.

Ideal Climate: As far as a pleasant climate is concerned, Lagos wins hands down, considering that you can experience blue skies all year round, together with very mild temperatures. In fact, it is often said that Lagos has the healthiest climate in all of Europe, and certainly the best in terms of playing golf. Daytime temperatures never become unbearable, and even on the warmest of days there's usually a lovely refreshing breeze coming in from the sea. Because of the ideal climate, many people with health conditions have ended up purchasing a property in Lagos, and who can really blame them, given the sheer beauty of the place.

With its small town charm, stunning beaches and enviable climate, Lagos has much to offer those who are looking to purchase property in Portugal. Unlike some of the other more touristy areas of the Algarve, Lagos has retained a charm that is appealing to many, while at the same time providing modern services and amenities essential to both resident and tourist.
