Granting that you have made a thorough research on hypnotherapy and are convinced that it is the right method to use for your particular predicament, then it would be time to look for a hypnotherapist. This decision can be a crucial factor as you start your road to healing. Overlooking this or giving little thought to this may not give you the expectations or change that you were hoping for.

A good hypnotherapist should be a member of a recognizable professional organization. Since hypnotherapy is an unregulated profession in most states, it is rare to find a licensed hypnotherapist. In lieu of this, there are professional organizations of hypnotherapists that certify their members. These organizations most likely have drawn their code or standards of ethics that their members, in order to continue their membership therein, must abide by. They may also conduct seminars or trainings that the members can avail of to help them improve on their specializations. If a hypnotherapist chooses to be a member of any or some of these organizations, it shows that he or she wants to be associated with the kind of professionalism that the organization stands for, and desires to adhere to their standards.

There are also good hypnotherapists who may not have chosen to become a member of any professional organization of hypnotherapists. This does not mean that they are less qualified to practice hypnotherapy but it would help the client to approach them only if they came with a recommendation from their trusted health professional.

A hypnotherapist must have the necessary training, knowledge and experience to be able to apply hypnotherapy to a client. It means he or she must have taken a course or went to a school and have put in the required hours to complete a hypnotherapy training. A long time practitioner who has no academic credentials may be an option, but they should come highly recommended or be approached with some degree of caution.

If your case is specialized, the suitable hypnotherapist must also have deeper understanding of that aspect of hypnotherapy so he or she can customize the approach to address your needs. It may be that a hypnotherapist is also not comfortable with the client s specific problems. He or she should be able to candidly reveal this and be able to refer the client to a more qualified practitioner.

The last description of a good hypnotherapist is actually not about them. Just as clients have different temperaments, hypnotherapists can be as diverse. A suitable one for the client must give him that sense of comfort and willingness to put himself under the hypnotherapist s care. This may not be easy to gauge especially if there are no comparisons.

Other practical consideration in determining the suitable hypnotherapist may include their proximity to the client s residence, and the fees they may charge. A good hypnotherapist, if chosen well, can certainly enhance the client s experience with hypnotherapy.

So now that you have a short list of potential hypnotherapists, what’s the next step?

You should also be able to have a chat with your hypnotherapist before you decide whether to use their services or not. Whether you actually visit their office or just talk to them over the phone doesn’t really matter. The main objective is to make sure that you have an opportunity to ask questions and, more importantly, feel comfortable with the answers, before you make your first appointment. Find out as much as you can so that you can feel confident that they are the right one for you.

Ask about their experience with the problem that you are going to see them about. What type of experience have they had in helping people overcome an issue like yours? Do they specialise in any particular area? Or are they more of a jack of all trades?

Be sure to ask about any concerns that you have about hypnosis. Don’t worry about sounding silly. Chances are, they’ve heard it all before and will happily answer any questions to help put your mind at ease.
Another point to consider is to tune into how you feel when you talk to them. Do you like them? Do they seem like someone that you’ll feel comfortable with? Although this won’t tell you how good they are at hypnosis, it’s a very important factor in determining how well you’ll work together.

Don’t go through with a session if you feel even the littlest bit uneasy about the therapist or their methods. It’s okay to say no and try someone else instead. Or you may even decide to stick with self hypnosis. It s up to you. Remember, it’s your mind that you’re trusting someone with and you want to sure that you’re completely comfortable with the therapist as well as the therapy being offered.
