Among the many rising problems in the society is alcoholism. More and more people are getting into this habit without realising its harmful effects. Alcoholism is a state when you consume alcohol to such an extent that it becomes difficult, rather impossible to perform your day to day tasks. Alcoholism has equally bad consequences in the short term and the long term.

There is a famous saying that "excess of everything is bad". Excessive alcohol usage can cause alcohol poisoning. This condition can be extremely dangerous, or even deadly. Alcohol poisoning occurs when too much alcohol is consumed, such as drinking more than five alcoholic beverages in a short amount of time. The size, age and weight of the person can elaborate how much alcohol consumption is sufficient before poisoning occurs.

There are many other problems that excess alcohol consumption can cause. Like every other thing, if alcohol is consumed in excessive amount, it might damage your brain and liver. Even if you are a regular drunkard, you may damage some part of your brain, which may lead to certain disorders in your body, controlled by that part of the brain. Similarly, the most frequent problems that are faced by many alcoholics, even if they are consuming it in small quantity, are confusion, passing out, vomiting, irregular breathing and hypothermia.

Once your body gets used to certain amount of alcohol, it will crave for more, and thus, you will end up consuming more and more alcohol with the passage of time. Your digestive system is ignored in the process, and your body gets used to it; you do not even feel in the beginning that you are taking excessive alcohol.

Excess alcohol consumption can lead to poisoning, which may eventually lead to death. This happens in most of the cases. There comes a state when the person consumes a lot of alcohol that it causes poisonous reactions in the body, thus, causing his death. If you take five drinks in a span of one hour, you are bound to get poisoned by it. In order to test if you are affected by excessive alcohol consumption or not, take a look at your lips if they are turning blue or your skin is getting clammy and if you are having difficulty in breathing causing less than twelve breaths per minute.

When you are becoming alcohol dependant, you may not realise it at that moment what it will cost you in the long run. It is generally observed that most of the times a person becomes alcoholic when he feels to consume it from his peers at some gathering. You may start it with a small amount, but it never stops there; instead, it keeps on increasing until it becomes a habit.

People become addicts because their bodies get used to it and their whole body functions start depending upon it. People start drinking if they feel too depressed or they are going through some emotional problems. They feel revived once they consume alcohol. This problem can even be genetic; this cause was proved by a research done by the human genome project.

For an alcoholic, it becomes very difficult to get rid of the habit as all the systems of his body become used to it. However, if the person makes up his mind that tries to quit it then there is nothing that can stop him from doing so. There are many medical treatments available for curing alcoholism. There are many rehabilitation centres, which help alcoholics in getting rid of their addiction. With his will power and with the help from the medical treatments, a person can get rid of his habit of drinking.

We can conclude that alcoholism harms our body and mind in numerous destructive ways, but people are taking it lightly, and have made it a part of their culture. The only solution to resolve the problem is to spread awareness among masses and try to help those who are already trapped in the web of this addiction and cannot escape by themselves.
