There are plenty of things you can do to help yourself sleep better. People are rightly wary of taking sleeping pills, since you build up a fast tolerance and can overdose so easily. More natural methods and sleep aids are often what people need to help them get some sleep. It is a matter of training and manipulating your body to respond correctly.
Firstly, you need to make sure that you have the right equipment. Make sure your mattress is comfortable and provides support. If you often wake up sore or exhausted after a full eight hours of sleep, then you should look into getting a better mattress. Have clean sheets that are well tucked in and a warm comforter or blanket that is not of a slippery material. Things like satin can fall off the bed easily.
Try sleeping in the pitch black with no noise. Many people like to have a little light on somewhere, along with a radio or television. These can provide comfort while you are falling asleep but can subtly keep you from sleeping very deeply. If you have to have noise of some kind, get a white noise machine or turn on a fan and just point it away from you. These can keep the room from becoming too quiet.
Try to take a warm bath or shower right before you go to bed or stay really warm from the time you leave the shower until you fall asleep. It has been proven that by raising your body temperature one degree before you sleep, you can fall asleep faster and deeper. It is also relaxing to take a nice long bath, so you can start your sleeping process before you even get into bed.
If you think you need a vitamin, take melatonin. It is a very safe over-the-counter vitamin that just helps your brain produce a chemical for natural sleep. It is safe for even children to use. You just take one pill about a half hour before bed. It will help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep until your body would naturally wake up. You can wake up easily without any grogginess.
Warm milk or heavy food is a way some people can feel sleepy. Do not eat directly before bed but rather give yourself at least an hour. You can then go to the bathroom a final time so you do not have to pee in the middle of the night. You can also give your stomach a chance to settle down and start digesting, rather than eating or drinking and jumping right in bed. You can then feel full without the excess energy that digesting gives off.
Reading is a very common solution since it can make people drowsy, too. You should make a point of not laying down while you do this, though. Read in a chair--or at least sitting way up in bed--until you feel drowsy. By laying down to read, you could end up making your body associate the bed with an awake activity.
Avoid doing anything in your bed other than sleeping. This is the best possible way to ensure that you sleep better. When you get into bed, your body should be trained to think "It is time to sleep, " not "It might be time to sleep, but it might also be time to watch television or work or eat." The more people do in their bed, the less well they tend to sleep.
