Having a backyard fish pond has always been very popular. The sound and site of water is very tranquil.

Want to build your own fish pond? Here are a few things to consider.

Where to Put it

Although most people think of having a pond in the exact center of their yards, this doesn't have to be the case. A lot of people locate them in corners, especially if they don't have big backyards.

The Kinds of Fish in it

The most common type of fish in a backyard pond is usually the koi. But don't rule out the ordinary goldfish.

Two of the most important characteristics of the fish you get are how much space they need and how long they will live. For example, koi are big fish. Therefore it stands to reason that they need a lot of living space. If you don't accommodate this, they may have shorter lifespans because of it.

The common goldfish can be a good choice of fish for a pond because they are inexpensive, so you will get a good return on your investment. They also don't require as much living space so they work better in a smaller pond.

Environment

With an outdoor pond, you are at the mercy of the elements. Or rather, your fish are. Keep in mind the temperature of your location in relation to the plants and fish in your pond. For example, if you live in a place that gets cold in the winter (as most places do), you may have to transfer your plants and fish indoors.

The Rest of Your Yard

So now you have a beautiful pond, but unfortunately it is in the middle of a very dull yard. Make sure that the look of the rest of your yard adds to the beautiful nature of your pond, not takes away from it. Also, carefully selected plants around your pond will attract birds and other wildlife.

Maintaining it

There shouldn't be a lot of maintenance required, but here are two things to watch for: 1. Water Level. You may have to add more water over time, depending on how much evaporates in your climate. 2. Leaves and Debris. Try to keep it clear of falllen leaves and twigs. These will eventually decay and cause the water to become murky.

Even if you don't have a huge yard, a pond can still find a place, making your yard an attractive and desirable place to hang out in nice weather.
