Ever since the Internet made its appearance about 15 years go, millions of people around the world have been dreaming of making a living off the net. To be able to work from home and have no boss to report to is indeed a noble dream, but alas how to make money online has stayed out of reach for most of us.
Something many people think of first when they decide to try and make money online is to join an MLM scheme. Many of the traditional offline MLM companies have indeed shifted their marketing and promotional efforts online during the past fifteen years. The numbers boggle the mind: With more than one billion people already having Internet access the potential to create an online MLM empire is certainly there.
Building an MLM downline using online resources is indeed possible. Resorting to sending out thousands of SPAM emails will unfortunately no longer make you successful in multi-level marketing. You have to spend time and build a personal connection with those you wish to recruit.
A similar system which works for many people is to sell products or services online on a commission basis. This is called an affiliate program. There are indeed thousands of affiliate programs all over the Internet. Depending on your interests and know-how, you can sell everything from web hosting to domain names, from books to CDs.
Some of these affiliate programs in fact operate on a commission structure which is not very different from a basic MLM system. They will not only pay you a certain commission if you sell a product yourself, but also if someone whom you have recruited as an affiliate makes a sale.
There are a number of factors you need to consider before making a decision on which affiliate program to join though. Below are a number of these considerations.
An important consideration is what percentage commission they will give you. There are many affiliate programs that pay only 5% commission or even less. There are others paying up to 75% - especially programs selling digital products like e-books. A higher percentage is obviously better ' but keep in mind that you might make more money from a product paying a lower commission if it is easier to sell than the product paying a high commission.
Something else you have to take into account is the level of market saturation that product or service has reached. When a product has been on the market for a long time and it has millions of affiliates, it becomes much more difficult for a particular affiliate to make any sales. In such a scenario it would be better to find a fairly new product with fewer affiliates competing with you.
Compiling a mailing list to stay in contact with potential customers is an excellent idea. A good way to get started with this is to give away a free e-book on your website and ask people who download it to sign up for more free information that will be sent to them later on.
Never send out spam to your mailing list members, only valid information on a regular basis. Otherwise you will never be successful with your efforts to learn how to make money on the Internet.
