Nearly everyone struggles with self esteem issues at some point during their life. For some of us, it is because we received harmful messages during childhood that undermined our feelings of self worth. For others of us, it is because of an event, such as a divorce or job loss, that happened later in life. Some people feel unworthy because of their appearance. Others lack self esteem because of economic limitations. Whatever the reason, we all struggle at one time or another, and could use some advice about how to build self confidence.

Often, we feel that we are powerless to improve our own state of mind. We think that since our bad feelings were the result of outside forces, only outside forces can change them. This is not true. There are lots of actions you can take to help improve your own emotional state and raise your self esteem. Here are a few things to try.

Exercise

Exercise works wonders in building self confidence and improving one's mood. And extra 30-45 minutes of physical activity two to four times a week can make a huge difference in your life. You will notice that when your body feels good, you feel much better about yourself. The more you work out, the better you feel. As you get more and more in shape, and are able to work out longer and harder, your confidence improves.

Figure Out What You Do Well

No matter who you are, there are things that come naturally to you and that you can do well without too much effort. For some, it may be writing. For others, singing. Some people are amazing cooks, while others are wonderful listeners. It is important to find out what you do naturally well, and to do it on a regular basis. There is nothing wrong with challenging yourself and learning how to do new things; that is a great risk to take! But you will do much better at the more challenging things if you give yourself the regular reinforcement and boosted confidence that comes from doing the things that come naturally.

Take Pride in How You Look

For many people, depression leads to the neglect of hygiene, grooming and appearance. Depressed people often feel that they lack the energy to make themselves look good. The problem is, this only increases our feelings of unworthiness. If you don't like your own appearance, then you have no reason to believe that others will like it. Looking in the mirror and being disappointed with what you see only exacerbates low self esteem. Take the time to take care of yourself. Wear colors that make you happy. Treat your appearance as a work of art, and you will be pleasantly surprised each time you pass a store window or mirror.

You already have all of the tools you need to feel good about yourself. As the old adage goes, "get in where you fit in." You don't have to radically alter your life to feel better about yourself. Once you make some small changes, any necessary big changes will follow.
