There are laws that protect you from hazards in your environment. Sometimes you purchase property and are not made aware of these hazards. In that case, among others, you will need to contact an environmental law attorney.

The air quality in your building as well as the water quality can be compromised in a variety of ways. Among the substances that are common culprits are mold, radon, sick building syndrome, lead, lead-based paint and asbestos. If any of these are in your building, you need to protect your rights. If you have purchased property with any of these problems, the costs for cleaning it should not be yours.

Other times, contamination occurs while you already own the building in question. If this happens, you will need the aid of a lawyer to determine who is to blame and to prove it. You may be able to sue the people responsible for damages and you will need an attorney in that case as well.

Even an experienced environmental attorney is going to need time to the necessary research and to build a case for you so do not wait to long to hire one. There are statutes of limitations as well and these vary according to state. This is another reason not to wait too long for filing.

Your lawyer can discuss with you what the likelihood is of success for your case. He or she will have the experience in the field that is necessary to know how to seek out justice. Your lawyer will have a better idea of whom to approach for damages as it could be a landlord, an insurance company or manufacturers and distributors of the contamination substance. These or other parties may need to be sued, either only one or a combination.

If there is a property with hazards that you wish to purchase, environmental lawyers can advise you on this. They can more easily get through the inherent difficulties of this type of purchase. Later, they can help you with either the renovation or the destruction of the building.

The environmental condition of your building is not something you can ignore, either for your sake or anyone else who spends time in it. If you own a business and you knowingly allow people to work in a contaminated building, you open yourself up to large lawsuits. Do yourself a favor and contact an environmental law attorney to ensure that you and everyone that works for you remains healthy.
