Obtaining ISO 14001 certification for your organization is an admirable goal, although it comes with many challenges. With a good ISO 14001 training program, your company may be poised to overtake the competition, but where do you find a good company to train your employees?

Obtaining certification is something many companies have tried and failed to do. Often times this was due to a lack of support for the program, either from the top or the bottom of the ladder. Implementing the standards requires flexibility and the support of superiors, but even after certification has been obtained, it doesn't end there. To retain your company's certification requires vigilance, to maintain the standards and documentation necessary to show auditors you are, in fact, in compliance.

There are numerous benefits to receiving your ISO 14000 certification. These include expanded marketing as "green" retailers or wholesalers are more willing to carry your products, an improved public image, reduced energy and material consumption, a possible reduction in insurance costs, and a reduced impact on the planet we all call home.

Many training facilities exist, some offering online courses and others offering travelling seminars. Some training centers hold regular training classes throughout the country and/or world, and most will be happy to arrange for training of large groups. There are a few excellent online courses that can provide valuable information and certification preparation as well.

There are a few things to keep in mind when looking for a company to train your workforce. One consideration is the type of examples they offer. Many training companies have taken a "generic" approach, and use examples that may not apply to your particular industry, or may not have examples of applications that pertain to your industry. You should also ensure that the Instructors are certified, as a certified Instructor is far more likely to know what type of information auditors are going to expect from your organization.

Once again, it is crucial that everyone from the very top to the very bottom supports the new standards and their application. Many companies have received their certification only to lose it after their first audit, simply because either the high-end or the low-end were not willing to change their procedures. This underscores the point that the entire company must be open to change.

With proper ISO 14001 training, and the willingness to implement and maintain its standards, your company will be ahead of the competition when vying for contracts. It can be a very difficult process obtaining certification to begin with, and maintaining it for the long-haul is only slightly less challenging. With the dedication to adopt and adhere to the standards, it will open new doors to your business.
