Drug abuse can be hard to notice in the beginning stages. It can start with something seemingly innocent such as a cigarette or something somewhat less innocent such as a joint. Parents need to become aware of the signs and what to do if they see any.

Peer pressure is certainly a factor which influences drug taking among teens in the UK. Some start by experimenting with the contents of their parent's medicine cabinet, with the likes of cold medicines or inhalants. It doesn't take much persuasion from that point for them to move on to harder drugs. Narcotics are currently a problem with teens in the UK as they consider them to be legal due to the fact that they are prescribed by a doctor.

Parents need to educate their teen on the danger of drugs but not just in a traditional, verbal way. It is advisable to take them to Narcotics Anonymous where they can see the effects of the dangers of drugs first-hand. There are other similar programs such as Narconon. You will also need to establish and maintain good communication with your teen. This has been made more difficult in recent years with the advent of social networking and digital communication devices limiting both the willingness and ability of teenagers to verbally communicate. So, it can be even harder to get the message across than it once was.

Plan family activities to have your teen more involved in healthier activities. This isn't always easy so consult with your teen what they would like to do. They are more likely to want to participate if they feel they are involved. Also, set some core family values and make it clear that drugs are not a part of those values. You must stick to what you teach and lead by example.

Even if you take all of the advice here, it doesn't mean that your teen will be detracted from experimenting. Become familiar with the early warning signs such as depression and withdrawal. If you do spot any of these signs, you must act quickly and talk to your teen. The quicker you are to react, the better the chance you have of preventing any drug abuse.
