When water damage sets in after a storm or from other sources such as a leaking washer, a homeowner should call a reputable water damage restoration company. Although, after a series of severe thunder storms, there are several dishonest 'specialists' claiming to have the best prices for restoring a basement or garage from water damage when all they are after is the insurance claim money.

When a basement or garage floods because of too much rain, a homeowner should first call their homeowners insurance company to see if they are covered. Many home insurance companies require flood insurance; even if the house is not located anywhere near water. This is because of the chance of flooding due to excess rain or sewer backup.

Another call should be made to the Better Business Bureau, BBB, to make sure that a company the homeowner is considering hiring for the cleanup and restoration is not a 'fly-by-night' operation. One of the issues a homeowner should look into is how long the company has been in business. This is a 'tell-tale' sign of a company that has just set up in a town where there have been storm damage and they want to help collect the insurance claims money; this is not always the case, but it is mostly true. There should also be no complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau as well, they take their claims very seriously.

Checking references from a company is another way to make sure a consumer is placing their trust in a good business. It is okay to ask a company for a list of former customers whom they have provided services for in order to check and see if these customers are happy with their work.

When searching for a business that performs water clean-up, be sure to find one that has 'all hours' and offers free estimates. This way if an accident of water happens in the middle of the night, a homeowner knows they won't have to wait until morning when their items are ruined before cleanup could begin.

So that the water damage does not happen again, a repair or restoration company should be fixing the problem so that it will not be repeating itself. Many of the general contractors or cleaning services will do one thing and that would be clean the mess, however, a restoration specialty business will be able to both clean and fix the water leaking problem.

One of the major concerns homeowners and insurance companies have is mold. Many, if not all, insurance companies will refuse to cover any type of mold. So it is important to take care of water damage as soon as it appears before the mold has time to appear. Leaving water damage until a later time is dangerous for the people who live in the house because the mold, mildew and other toxins in the air can get into the air they breathe and cause all types of problems. For the woodwork and concrete, the water can 'eat' away at the materials and possible need replacing which would cost the homeowner more money.

Finding a good, honest water damage restoration company only takes a little investigation into their background. Believing that if a company has done a good job in the past, they will do a good job for you might be well and good, but it never hurts to check out a company that is going to work on a person's biggest investment they own, their home.
