Alton - Hampshire is a small market town in southern England which has origins dating back to Saxon times. The town is located in the north of East Hampshire, or East Hants as it is abbreviated. Although its position is inland it is only around 30 miles from the sea.
Modern day Alton combines historic buildings with more recently built constructions. The history of the town can be followed in the local Curtis Museum which contains a variety of exhibitions and interesting artifacts including an Anglo Saxon buckle and a Roman cup. The town also plays host to the Allen Gallery which contains a fascinating collection of ceramics.
The countryside surrounding the town is truly stunning, with the South Downs National Park and other open green areas in abundance. Each with their own geographical features. Walking itineraries abound, from easy to difficult. Nature enthusiasts will have a field day spotting the various flora and fauna.
There are some lovely villages nearby too including Chawton, which is situated just south of the town. This is where Jane Austen lived out her final years and her former home is now open to visitors. The 17th century house contains many articles from the life of the English novelist including letters and documents as well as original pieces of furniture. Austen fans can also follow the walking routes on the Jane Austen Trail, around the places connected to her world.
Alton is well connected by rail, with direct trains running to London Waterloo. The station is also a terminal for restored steam locomotives on the historical Watercress Line, which travels between Alton and Alresford. Travelers on the line can choose between a number of themed journeys, such as the Real Ale Train, where locally brewed beers can be supped on board.
Alton has had status as market town for centuries, and its origins date back to at least 1232. Originally Saturday was market day but today it is held on Tuesdays. The town hosts other markets and fairs including the monthly Farmers Market where customers can buy locally made products like preserves and cakes as well as vegetables and fruit.
Alton - Hampshire has a pretty full events calendar, particularly during the summer months. In June, Alton and Chawton jointly host the Jane Austen Regency Week, with readings, plays and concerts among other activities. Events held in July include The Alton Show, Food Festival and the Bus Rally.
