Sales promotion is a tricky business. Companies want to encourage reluctant consumers to try new products or to switch to their brand. One important tool to manage this is free product sample distribution. When free samples are distributed, a company makes a full- or trial-sized product available free of charge to consumers. They are able to try the product, then, without risk.
When samples are distributed, it is generally to accompany a new product launch. For other products, the manufacturer will distribute samples in order to increase market share. When samples are distributed, the product gets into the hands of more people. This is accomplished in many different ways.
Direct mail sampling is familiar to most consumers. In this sampling, free product samples are mailed directly to homes in a specific area that has been targeted based on demographic characteristics. Newspaper is also sometimes used to distribute a sample to a large number of people in a given area.
Door-to-door delivery of free product samples has the benefit of saving money for packaging and mailing. It is more targeted, and has a shorter lead time as well.
Sometimes samples are included in packages of other products. This piggyback sampling is an easy way to get the attention of consumers. When product samples are distributed via this means, often the samples are distributed in high traffic areas like theaters or shopping malls.
Most shoppers have had samples at a grocery store, or have been given a sample package while shopping. This is called in-store sampling and is the most frequently used method for distributing free product samples.
Because of this, they often then will make impulse purchases of this line. In fact, this boosts business so much that many companies will permit consumers to request samples via the Internet.
That doesn't mean that there are limitless samples. Every company still has to make money, and they only budget to much for giveaway or promotional materials. If you want to get a sample or a coupon via the internet, it's important to request this as early as possible.
How do companies decide when product sampling will be appropriate? Generally, they distribute product samples when they can't get that kind of effect with simple advertising alone. It also has to make financial sense - it should not cost more to distribute the samples than is reasonable.
