Women travel solo to a wide range of destinations, and for a wide variety of reasons. Maybe it's because they prefer their own company and like to travel solo, maybe it's because they want to see a destination from a different angle, or maybe they started out travelling in a group and split off on their own. Whatever their reason for choosing solo women travel, most find it an enriching experience.
There are both benefits and negative factors to solo travel. One of the major benefits is that your time is your own to do what you want with. If you want to spend an extra hour looking around a museum, you can. If you want to spend an extra week in a town you've fallen in love with, you don't have to discuss it with anyone. Plus, solo travel opens you up to meeting more people - maybe it won't just be a town you fall in love with. You'll get closer to your destination because one person travelling alone can often have experiences that aren't open to groups.
A negative of solo travel is that many women feel isolated because there isn't anyone close to share travel experiences with. However, people you meet can quickly turn into friends, whether you just have a drink together or go on a day trip or more. That is the great thing about travel, meeting locals as well as other travelers who want to have a great time and share a good experience.
Security is another factor to consider when women travel solo. It's important to keep an eye on your belongings at all times - use the hotel safe, wear a moneybelt and use the lockers if you're staying in a hostel. Also, use a padlock on your bag when you leave it in the hotel or check it into a bus or plane. Travelling alone means there's no-one to watch your things when you go to the bathroom. Use a bike lock or ask someone to watch your bags for you - a family or a couple is probably a better bet than a lone man.
If you're thinking about solo travel, do it. Women travel alone all the time, you can too.
