Alcohol Abuse Is One Step Away From Dependency

It is the norm for many in the UK to consume a bottle of wine a night and although that in itself would trigger mixed feelings as to whether it could be considered to be alcohol abuse, it doesn't take much before that bottle becomes two bottle and a half and the line has very definitely been crossed.

The biggest problem with alcohol abuse is that it can quickly lead to alcohol dependency. This is where problems can really begin to develop, problems such as ill health in the form of liver damage or brain damage. If the individual is pregnant, more potential damage is on the cards. It can also have an effect upon the personality with the individual lacking consideration for others and even expressing violence.

Alcohol abuse can cause problems not just for the individual but for his family, friends and colleagues. It can affect his relationships with them and even alter his entire personality. Other areas of life which can be affected are work and finance and social issues. It can also heighten the risk of danger, for instance, when driving under the influence of alcohol.

It is best, if possible, to break the habit sooner rather than later. But he habit can't be broken if the individual fails to recognise that something needs to be done.

Living with someone who engages in alcohol abuse is no picnic either. They may feel sympathy for them in the early stages but depending on how the individual reacts to the increased alcohol consumption, that sympathy can soon turn into resentment, anger or fear. They need to know that they aren't the only one being affected and that is motivation in itself for many to react before it's too late.
