A Quick Look At British Foods

In most European countries, a common tradition of having lunch with the family is found. In Britain there is slight shift from this practice. In general, they take their lunch in their workplace or school or college. The reason for such a routine is that they have to travel far away from their houses to their place of work. Such a schedule changes on Sunday. Sunday is a holiday. So on Sunday the whole family gathers around the supper table to enjoy their lunch. In general, Sunday dinner is considered the best all week. Beef roast and Yorkshire pudding are often seen on the dining table on this day. These are very traditional British food.

With time every thing changes and food habits are no exception to this. English food has also taken the patterns from other cuisines to develop it and to make it richer. The English food has its foodie fans around the world. The British food was often tagged as blunt and frugal unlike its French and Italian counterparts. The economy of Britain was largely responsible for this. With Industrial revolution the country saw the birth of two classes the rich industrialists and the labor class. The labor class could not afford beyond frugal meals. But with change in the economic scenario of the masses the food habits of the British has also altered. The food habit of a nation is a good indicator of its economic status.

Chocolate is something with which all of us are familiar around the world. British chocolate enjoys certain popularity for its taste and flavor. But it was the Spanish people who brought chocolate to Europe from Incas and Aztecs. Soon chocolate became one of the favorite drinks among the Europeans. There were chocolate houses all over Europe who served hot chocolate and other delicacies of cocoa. Britain was no exception. The country saw its first chocolate house in the year 1657. Till date British chocolate has retained its popularity round the world.

When we are talking about chocolate we have to talk about John Cadbury. During the early 19th century he opened up his shop. He started as a coffee and tea dealer. In the due course of time he started selling cocoa beans and hot chocolate. Today the brand name Cadbury has become synonymous with milky chocolate.

Hot chocolate is not only delicious but at the same time it is also an energy drink. Nowadays we get many modified versions of energy drinks. Lucozade and Ribena are popular British energy drinks. Today they are used mainly taken by the sports persons. Brown sauce is a very popular in the British cuisines. Besides chocolate there are other aspects of British food. They are fish and chips, banger and mash and the Sunday roast, steak and kidney pie.

The British food is a conglomeration of English, Scottish and Welsh cuisine. Each of these has an individual taste of their own. Foods like Cheshire cheese, the Yorkshire pudding, Arbroath Smokie, and Welsh cakes enjoy popularity around the world.
