Having a new dog is a very exciting thing for a family. If you want to have a good relationship with your new pet, it's important to start off on the right page. Below you will find some tips on how to make the most of your new addition to the family.
Start by teaching your dog your household rules. Your dog will be better off and happier when setting boundaries right away.
Get your dog housebroken as soon as possible. Make a point to do this within the first couple of weeks and also to show your pet where his "area" will be.
Don't allow your dog to roam the entire home until you are sure he is well trained. This will take a lot of work but it will be worth it. Small pups will require more time to be broken in but adult dogs will learn quicker.
In the beginning keep the visitors and activities to a minimum until he adjusts. Dogs are sensitive so allow him plenty of time to adapt to the new surroundings, especially if he's a shelter dog. Be patient with your new pet, it will take some time.
Dogs need to know who the leader is. From the beginning you need to establish that you are in charge with your dog. If this doesn't take place right away, the training process will be more difficult.
Once you are both settled in, consider hiring someone to teach your dog, attend a class together or train him yourself. But don't delay obedience training.
Who knows what the limits are with a well trained pet! They are happier and more content also.
