What To Consider If Getting Christening Gifts

For most families a christening is a big event. It is a time for celebration and a time for families and friends to come together. It centres around the girl or boy and the path they will take in life. The ceremony is often celebrated by the giving of christening gifts. But knowing what is considered appropriate isn't always easy.

To work out what the best type of gift is, it is best to look at the family and their values and beliefs. Take into consideration also how old the child is, often they are very young of age so try to get something that is suitable. Also note if the family, especially the parents, are traditional or if they are more modern and open to new ideas and concepts.

Traditionally silver gifts are given at christenings, this goes all the way back many years and is still very popular this day. Girls will often receive silver jewellery such as a bangle or a chain. Boys often get things like cuff links. Then there are more popular unisex gifts all in silver like rattles, egg cups and photo frames which are pretty but also a little predictable.

Some people opt for different ideas for a child's christening and this can really make a difference. Some parents also agree that the usual silver rattles or cutlery are pretty but they have no real practical use. The child doesn't really gain anything from them other than maybe looking at them in later life, which doesn't serve much purpose.

Gifts that have a use or can be used practically are things like clothing or hair slides. The silver aspect could be retained by having a coat with silver buttons or silver accessories such as pin badges or hair grips. Girls may like more up to date silver jewellery such as a ring and boys are often happy with a silver toy such as a car or action figure.

It is usually a good idea not to go for items that are very expensive or solid silver. This goes for many occasions and not just christenings. The problem here is budget, the parents may be on a low income and where a lovely solid silver piggy bank may be beautiful. But it may also embarrass them if they're not able to provide that level of gift for their own child. So keep it simple and not too pricey.

As times move on and gift giving gets more elaborate and different, people can think of more unusual ideas for gifts. Some parents will open a trust fund for their child and if people wish to add to it they are given the details. The child once they are older can then receive the money and spend it as they wish once they are an adult.

Sometimes looking ahead for the child can be a really exciting gift. A baby won't necessarily remember its own christening but imagine their delight when at age 18 they open a gift given by a friend or family member for their first driving lesson or to fund their education. They are christening gifts the recipient will remember fondly.
