Being Independent Can Be Tough At First

Some people can't imagine living by themselves. Maybe you've always been in a relationship or maybe you are just getting out of your parent's house. Whatever your situation, be sure that you are not the only one who finds the prospect of independence slightly scary. One should never just jump from being a dependent person to being independent overnight; you should work at it slowly and gradually change your ways.

As with anything, establishing independence requires a solid foundation. Do like the tortoise and take things slowly but steadily. You will get there if you keep at it.

First, start paying for your own stuff. Don't let other people treat you all the time and definitely don't expect other people to pay your way. For example, picking up the bill for dinner screams self-reliance and automatically makes you look more confident.

Make sure you pay your bills on time, and everything is in your name. You never want to be behind on your rent or electric bill; taking on the responsibility of paying important bills is a huge step towards independence.

Make sure you learn how to be by yourself. It is important to be comfortable when you are not surrounded by people; needing to be around a bunch of people is a crutch that truly independent people do not need.

Try to find a hobby you can do alone, or pick up a book and read. Reading is a great way to spend time with yourself, and any solo hobby gives you the chance to find things that you like and get to know yourself better.

Get out of your comfort zone and be adventurous. Try new things, things you may not be comfortable with. At first, it may seem like a chore, but after a while you will adapt and get used to it.

Last but not least, don't force yourself to become introverted if you are not. Learning how to alone does not mean you should for six the company of others all the time. Be social because you want to be, however, not because you need to be.
