A major part of any kitchen remodeling or redesigning is acquiring new kitchen cabinets or upgrading your existing ones to become more modern and contemporary. If you buy a new one, however, how do you know what to buy, which is the best for your own kitchen?

There are two main cabinet styles that you need to be aware of: the traditional style and the European style. Of course there are also other types, such as the custom type, the stock and the custom modular one. If you want to know more details about each particular type, you can easily ask the sales person in the kitchen furniture store. But of course, you can also browse through the catalogs of manufacturers that have an online presence.

When it comes to choosing between the European or the traditional styles for your kitchen cabinets, there are some dominant differences that you need to be aware of. The European style is a newer type that has only entered the US after the second World War. The traditional style is common to the US for many years. You might actually know the two styles under different names. The traditional style is also called frameface, and the European style is called frameless cabinet.

When using frameface ones you are able to use various thin or low quality stock material for the sides because the actual frame is hiding that material from view. However the frame takes extra space that could be well used otherwise. The front opening is quite smaller so everything inside including drawers and shelves also need to be smaller to fit in.

The frameless cabinets are smaller than the traditional ones and they can be placed anywhere in the kitchen. They have a rather narrow strip that effectively covers the panel edge. When you close the door, you don't really see the hinges, as they are hidden from view. Due to the standard sizes of these cabinets, you can easily fit any types of kitchen cabinet organizers in them. This is actually one of the major benefits of having European cabinets instead of the traditional ones in your kitchen.
