Types Of Body Armor

Body armors serves as protective shields because they help in stopping ballistics from penetrating through the body. The term they use nowadays for modern day body armors is bulletproof vest.

The design of bulletproof vests is to prevent any projectiles from entering the body which can harm to sensitive organs from the chest to the abdominal areas.

Bulletproof vests are made of either Spectra or Kevlar with the addition of steel or ceramic plates. They are able to stop bullets by dispersing the energy of the bullet over a large area on the bulletproof vest.

Technological advancements of ammunition and ballistics have led to the development of different types of body armor. The military and other law enforcement agencies, including private securities, utilize bulletproof vests for protection against gun fire.

The design and materials being used on a bulletproof vest will vary depending on its use. Among the materials being used for making bulletproof vests, Kevlar is the most popular. This is because Kevlar has a unique characteristic of being lightweight and stronger than steel which is why it is often the material of choice for making bulletproof vests.

Kevlar is made through the weaving of Kevlar yarn to make a cloth like material. This is then layered and interwoven with other Kevlar cloth with the addition of resins to form a material that is capable of absorbing and dispersing huge energy. Below is a list of the types of body armors:

Soft Bulletproof Vest - this is the most common type of body armor and it is the one being used by the police and private securities. It is made by interweaving fibers along with soft clothing to form a net. This is effective only against ordinary weapons but not against high caliber rounds.

Interceptor Vests - this armor is made using Kevlar along with protective plates along key areas. These areas are the front, the back, the throat, and the groin.

Personnel Kevlar Vest - this is a physical armor that is made of thick Kevlar filler. It contains swivel shaped shoulder pads, two front pockets, two grenade hangers, and a 3/4 inch collar.

Dragon Skin Armor - this armor is made by using silicon carbide ceramics that are in the form of small discs and made to overlap each other. This gives the wearer flexibility as well as protection against multiple shots.
