One of the main reasons why people avoided buying PS3 was its cost. The newest PS3 Slim by Sony is not only slim in size but also in price. With the prices down by almost $100, PS3 Slim is much more reasonable than the older PS3. However, not much has changed except the cost. All the major features of PS3 have been retained in PS3 Slim.

Except for the reduced power consumption and the price, there are no real changes compared to original PS3. The 45 nm manufacturing process has brought down the power consumption by about 34%, where the price is down by a good $100. The finish of the system has also been changed and the new PS3 Slim comes with a matte finish, rather than a glossy one.

Another small yet significant change is the noise made by the disc-drive. It is very noticeable while playing some games and can be little disturbing. However it is subdued while watching movie on the Blu-ray disc. Like its older brother, PS3 Slim allows you to playback MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 from its USB ports or any disc-based media player. The back of the console comes with the PlayStation's proprietary AV output, an Ethernet jack, HDMI output and optical digital audio output.

PS3 Slim is a disappointment for those still having PS2, as the new system is not backward compatible with PS2. So if you cannot do without your favorite games on PS2, its best to go with the original version of PS3.

Whether you should consider buying PS3 Slim is a matter of choice and needs. If you have been waiting for PS3 prices to drop, then PS3 Slim provides you the chance to get the same features at a lower cost. On the other hand, if you want to upgrade from PS3, don't waste your money.
