Is Goal Setting Really Necessary

A lot of people refuse to set themselves gaols in their business and also in their lives. This is often down to a fear of not quite reaching where they are aiming. I feel that it is important to give yourself a guide through the difficulties that may lie ahead and have something to relate back to make sure that you are travelling along the right path.

I believe that if you are to continue along your intended path then the use of goal setting will help with this greatly.

To start with what you should do is write down your goal for 5 years time. Think about it very seriously. When you have been running your business for 5 years where do you really expect to be.

Over this period you can be really precise about all aspects of where you want things to be.

Where do you want to be living? What type of house? What type of car? Then look at your business in 5 years time. Where do you want that to be? How many people on your list? What level of income? Who do you want to be working with? How will it be structured? Put down anything and everything.

Ok, so now look at half way to the end goal. Look at some of the things that you are looking to achieve. Where will you need to be to still be on track for the long term goals? What position does your business have to be in, at this stage, to make sure that the final goal will be achieved?

Look at the two year period then the one year point and lastly the half year mark.

Now were getting closer to where you are now, now you start to think "I'm not sure I can do that". Forget that, YOU CAN!

All you have to do now is split the next six months into an action plan that will lead you to the first check point. Make sure that you achieve all that you set out to do in each monthly period and the long term stuff should look after itself. Work on what you will do in the first month.

Then the second month may be the time to assess where you want to be for example do you have all the facebook and twitter friends that you need, how many articles and videos have you done.

From the third month on you can establish what you need to achieve to meet the targets set out in the six month goal.

You should ensure that the whole plan ties together and that it all leads to the end goal.

At the end of each month you can check that you have achieved what you set out to achieve, if not then you can see where you are falling behind and do something about it the following month. If you don't have these short term goals then it is quite easy to just drift along without really getting anywhere. Three or four months down the track you wonder why you still have not earned any money and become one of the 97% who 'fail' at Internet Marketing.

The thing that does sometimes put a fly in the ointment is the unexpected. You must be flexible enough to change your goals if the circumstances dictate that they have to change. After all this is a fairly long term process we are putting in place and we can never be certain of what the future brings.

Just believe in yourself and build your business in your own time. You can simply use goal setting as a tool to keep you on the path that is right for you.
