Cheerleader jokes are nearly as common as blonde jokes, but that is fine with former Oakland Raiders *** Anjelah Johnson. In fact, she would prefer it if people laugh at her. Following her career as a Raiderette (during which she won the Rookie of the Year award), Johnson has worked hard to make a name for herself as a standup comic. She is on her way to becoming a household name because of a loyal fan base who can't get enough of her observational humor.
Certain milestones have to come before a comic has "made it," and Anjelah Johnson is well on her way to the label. First, she appeared in a one-hour special on Comedy Central titled Anjelah Johnson: That's How We Do It. Fans at the performance were also treated to a performance by The Beat Freaks of America's Best Dance Crew fame. The 2009 special was made into a DVD, which includes 30 minutes of content not shown in the special. Some of the bits only on the DVD include "Meet Tia Mary," "Fortune Cookies" and "Talking to Married Couples."
Along with her special and DVDs, Johnson is also making her mark on the film scene, appearing in films like Our Family Wedding and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. She also had a guest spot on the hit television show Ugly Betty, but that isn't her first experience on a television show. Johnson was part of the 13th season of MADtv.
Even with all her projects, Johnson maintains a love for standup comedy. Fans looking for Anjelah Johnson tickets around the country will be in luck during the fall of 2010, because she has booked stops in places like Arlington, Va.; Charleston, S.C.; Ontario, Canada; Louisville, Ky.; Houston, Texas; Cleveland, Ohio and many more.
Johnson spent her childhood in San Jose, Calif. She is of Mexican and Native American descent, which she weaves into her standup act. Faith was a big part of her childhood, and Johnson has embraced that faith as an adult. She is even set to be part of the 2010 Captured Conference in Texas, which is a conference for Christian women. She discovered her love for standup while in college, but didn't pursue it full time until after her stint with the Raiders. Her comedy career began taking off when she became a YouTube hit.
The fact that Johnson talks about her Latin heritage during her standup acts has prompted comparisons to comedian George Lopez, and Johnson even made an appearance on Lopez's late night show. In an interview with Latina Magazine, Johnson explained why she is different than Lopez. She said, "My fan base is so vast that I really relate to everybody, because I feel like I'm a part of everybody. I'm in touch with my inner white girl, I'm in touch with my inner black girl, I'm in touch with my inner Latina self-and I think that comes across when I'm doing my comedy. If you watch George's show Lopez Tonight, his audience is predominately Latinos."
