If you have bad credit, it can affect many aspects of your life. Having negative items on your credit report can prevent you from purchasing a house, opening a bank account or credit card, and landing a job. There are ways you can eliminate your bad credit. While there may be illegal methods to remove bad credit, like internet scams and falsified documents, there are many legal procedures as well.

The first step in resolving any poor credit issues is to obtain a copy of your credit report. It is a good idea to keep a copy on hand even if you don?t suspect any problems. You can keep track of your credit standing and remain aware of any penalties you may be incurring with creditors. Once you receive your credit report, look it over carefully. Thousands of mistakes are made on credit reports each year, and your bad credit may be a result of a clerical error.

If you find inaccurate information in your credit history, you will be able to have it removed. You can file a claim with the credit bureau and inform the creditor about the dispute. You will need to mail copies of any related documents that may prove that the information is false. The credit bureau will investigate your claim, and if you are correct, the information will be removed or corrected. You should also request that the bureau sends the updated history to any of your creditors who received the original report.

If the information on your report is accurate, you may still be able to have it adjusted. You can speak to the creditors involved and request that an amendment be made. Some creditors may suggest that you use debt consolidation to fix your bad credit. Consolidating your debts allows you to combine each balance into one figure, so you can pay your dues more quickly. Once your debts are consolidated, your creditors may be willing to amend the information on your credit report. You may also be able to refinance a debt into a new loan with a lower interest rate. Regardless of which method you choose, the best way to erase bad credit is by making payments consistently and promptly.

Legally eliminating bad credit is possible, but you need to do your research. There may be restrictions and limitations for certain types of debt. Once you have a copy of your report, you can check each item for accuracy and begin to rebuild your credit one step at a time.
