Cat urine odors are one of the most disgusting smells any cat lover should deal with on a regular basis. It is a constant problem that has to be addressed to as soon as possible. Cat litter box are one of the greatest source of unwanted odors, other home furniture and carpets are also favorite spots of cats to urinate.

If you are a cat owner, you’ve already dealt with these issues and maybe you’re already aware of some of the sources of their odors and what causes them to be smelling so nasty. Unfortunately, there still a lot of cat owners who still needs to learn a lot about the cause of cat urine odors and why they urinate on places that they shouldn’t. Here are some reasons and some solutions for cat urine odor that can hopefully help you with your battle.

Cats are either spraying or urinating on certain areas of your house. Spraying is different from urinating although both uses urine, they are different in terms of purpose and their smell often differs from one another. The main reason why your cat is spraying is because they are marking their territory on certain changes in their environment. Possible reasons for this are new pets in the house, a new person and sometimes even a new sound that are not familiar with them.

For them to stop marking their territory, you have to reassure your cat by spending time with them and making the feel that nothing has really changed. While doing so, you might as well try reprimanding the cat to stop spraying when you caught him on the act. Believe it or not, cat spraying is very easy to correct than other unwanted behaviors that they have. You can try spraying some water into his face several times to let him know that you reprimand his actions.

Other times, little accidents happen when your cat urinates inside your house, and their favorite spot is usually your expensive carpets. Reasons for these accidents may vary, may it be that their litter box is already full or they have a health condition. As the cat owner, it’s your duty to keep clean their litter box on a regular basis. If they keep doping the “accident” over and over, you can bring him to the vet and check if he has any medical condition that lads him to urinate inside the house again and again.

Even if it’s spraying or urinating, you have to address this problem as soon as possible. Fresh urine is much easier to deal with than old ones. When you caught your cat urinating on a specific spot, try blotting up as much urine as you could using an absorbent cloth or paper towels. Homemade recipes includes a mixture of water and vinegar is also effective for fresh urines and so does baking soda. Just pour generous amount in the area and leave it for several minutes, then use a vacuum to dry up the area.

For old cat urine stains and smell, enzyme-based products are very effective, but first you have to identify the exact location where your cat peed. You can use a black light in locating the area. Then use the enzyme-based product on the area and let it sit for 24 hours or even more, depending on the severity of the situation. Steams clean the area after the treatment.
