Did you know that the beauty products you use on a daily basis likely contains cancer causing carcinogens? Pretty alarming if you ask me. These toxins may come as carcinogens, mutagens, teratogens, reproductive toxins, developmental toxins, skin/sense organ toxicants. You’re probably thinking…huh? Let’s break these down a bit to understand these terms a little better. In fact, for this post, let’s just discuss carcinogens. The others will be reserved for future posts.

Cancer causing carcinogens are substances that can come in various forms. They can come in the form of radiation such as gamma rays and alpha particles which are emitted and absorbed by the body. Carcinogens can be inhaled in the form of smoke or asbestos. They can be absorbed by the body through the skin when we come into physical contact with them. Such products are household products and beauty products like make-up, face wash, moisturizer and shampoo. Carcinogens can also be ingested by mouth when we eat foods that have carcinogenic substances in them. An example of this is the black carbon formed on food when grilling or barbecuing. A natural carcinogen that may be ingested (although more commonly found in third world countries) are aflatoxins which is a fungus produced by grains and nuts.

Cancer causing carcinogens are substances that have the unique ability to disrupt and damage our genetic make-up. When genes are altered they replicate altered. And when these mutations are replicated they can form a cluster of cells called a tumor. Tumors lead to cancer. Carcinogens damage our DNA which is our genetic make up. When uncontrolled and the damage is too severe to repair, this leads to programmed cell death. Our bodies naturally respond to these invaders by attempting to eliminate them from our bodies, but sometimes these invaders are too strong to fight.

So why are there so many toxins in our products? If they are regulated, shouldn’t they be safe? The cosmetic industry says the amount of carcinogenic substances in our products is too little to matter. However, think about all of the products we use on a daily basis. The compound effect may demonstrate that we actually come into contact with carcinogens on a much larger scale than we think. When we use multiple toxic products a day, ingest carcinogens in our food, and inhale carcinogens these all can add up in the long term. It’s important that we educate ourselves on the harmful effects of carcinogens in our beauty products. You only have one body o you might as well take care of it. Cancer causing carcinogens are everywhere and you can’t see them with a *** eye. However, you can become informed and do what’s necessary to keep them away from your body and protect your health.

So the question is now what? Well, it's important to look for products that do not contain carcinogens. You might notice that there is now a much nicer selection of beauty products that aim to keep carcinogens out. Holistic beauty products are the way to go and should be taken seriously. Paying a little more for them will go a long ways in terms of long term health and prevention. Don't take any risks when it comes to you health. You may end up paying for it later.
