The liver is the said to be the largest organ in the human body besides being the largest gland. It is found in the upper right abdomen below the diaphragm and its function is to;
Synthesize protein
Process and store fats
Detoxify the body
Secrete bile
Store carbohydrates
The liver can be damaged through infection, contact with toxin and drug (even alcohol), direct and indirect injury or even through genetic defect. Damaging substances like copper and iron could also build up and cause considerable damage on the liver.
Some of the symptoms associated with liver damage are;
Nausea
Vomiting
Abdominal pain(mainly in the upper quadrant specifically on the right)
Jaundice
Fatigue
Weight loss
There being many varieties of liver diseases liver damage symptoms tend to be more specific.
Gallstones- Abdominal pain, vomiting if he or she eats fatty meals and sometimes fever.
Cirrhosis-easy bruising, itching as a result of bile salts being deposited on the skin.
gynecomastia, confusion, impotence (as a result of decreased function of *** hormones.),ascites (due to reduced production of protein.) , muscle wasting, and varices in the esophagus and stomach regions of which could be dangerous, and yellow eyes.
Other symptoms of liver damage can be traced to mottled palms and often yellow, thinning hair, whitish fingernails, and enlarged liver.
Aflatoxin may also be introduced into the liver. This exposure of the liver to aflatoxin could produce acute hepatic necrosis resulting to cirrhosis at later stages. However much tolerance man shows to aflatoxin, chronic exposure is responsible for risks of liver cancer.
Given the role of this organ in the human body, it is only fair if we care for this organ to avoid damaging it. Always eat healthy food and exercise. Avoid getting intimate with strangers whom you are not sure of his or her medical condition to avoid risk of Hepatitis C which is capable of damaging the liver. If possible eat minimally processed foods. Eat more vegetables and berries.
Food containing magnesium, iron sulphate and vitamin B come in handy too. As much as you can, avoid food with lots of sugar additives and unhealthy fats. Minimize drug intake where you can and avoid taking a lot of alcohol if you cannot quit. Wash everything that you suspect to be having chemicals before consumption as some chemicals have the capability to directly damage liver cells.
With the slightest liver damage symptoms don't hesitate to see the doctor.
