The first thing that is important to remember about social media marketing in general; always have a strategy, a brand objective and an idea how you will market your brand in the social arena.

Over the years we have become adjusted to the marketing ideas of the and #34;big brands and #34;, now it might be time for a different approach - try social media fan pages for your branded products. Have you considered the possibility of social media and viral marketing when building an advertising campaign? Maybe not. Take a moment to consider what social media can do for your business and your marketing brand.

Do I have a product worth marketing?

The answer is probably yes and #33; If your product is for sale then it can be marketed through social networks.

What can I do to start an online marketing campaign?

Firstly, you can research your competitors online advertising habits, what they use, what they are saying and most importantly; how they are engaging with their customers in the social arena.

You may find that your business is in a very fortunate position - your nearest competitor may not have considered social media for marketing and advertising purposes. They may not have realized it and #39;s potential and #33;

Secondly, workout who your key audience is, what they are interested in and what you can do to attract their business. This is the most important step in creating an online campaign. Consider this; prospective customers need to be enticed to buy a product or service, this means that your approach has to meet the needs of the audience.

Once you know who your target market is you can start to build a campaign. Look at the different options available in the online marketing and social arena.

You may consider Facebook and Twitter to be your main place of advertisement. These are good but also remember that tried and tested blogging and viral marketing is also worthwhile. You should carefully plan your options and build information streams for each of the marketing inputs.
