Created in the 19th century by working Englishmen, this breed was made for trapping mice and rats that took over mine shafts and clothing mills. While the origin of this breed is not proven, it is thought to have originated from the English city, Yorkshire. When the Yorkshire Terrier was first created, it was larger than what we know now, but breeders used smaller dogs to develop a toy breed. Yorkie puppies were made into a fashion dog and women took them everywhere they went in a small purse.
Appearance of Yorkie Puppies
Yorkie puppies are a small breed averaging at about 7 pounds and standing around 6-7 inches tall in adulthood. Their most noticeable traits are their erect ears and long silky coat. These puppies are born black, brown, and tan and start to change their color as they get older. An interesting color they share is a dark steel blue shade on their head and tail while the rest of their body is usually tan. A lot of times the hair on this breeds head is so long that it requires a bit of trimming so it won't get into the food bowl.
Temperament of Yorkie Puppies
Yorkie puppies tend not to realize how small they are most of the time and are extremely brave despite this disadvantage. They are very adventurous and are eager to please the owner by staying loyal and protective against outsiders. These puppies are often recommended for adults and considerate children because of their small size and their need for attention and affection. Yorkie puppies start out as excellent watchdogs and grow to more alert and protective adults. It is important not to let these puppies grow up thinking they are in charge of the house because they will only get more territorial as they get older.
Health Problems that Come with Yorkie Puppies
This breed is prone to eye infections, early tooth decay, and bronchitis. Yorkies have a very sensitive stomach and should avoid overly sweet and exotic treats. These puppies have very fragile bones that can fracture from falls and can also develop spinal problems.
Grooming and Caring for your Yorkie Puppy
Exercise is very important to stay on top of for this breed because they are very active little puppies and need to release their energy in a positive way. Exercise is a good idea not only for obvious health reasons, but also for behavioral discipline as well. If this puppy is running around like crazy, it is a good idea to pay attention and give them what they are really asking for, more exercise and play.
The average life expectancy for Yorkies is between 12-15 years, but is not uncommon for these dogs to live many more years after.
