Before the start of Free MMO's way back in the start 1990's, the prices needed to run an MMO to cover its servers and constantly needed game updates forced companies to sit back and look for a new direction on where this kind of money can be pulled from.

First glance managers decided on top of purchasing the title, a annual subscription would also be needed to be maintained from its customers for the game to continue to pay for its constant payment of expenses and developer wages. Some of the early payment models actually had the player instead of paying every month like we have and know of now, but having them paying by the hour!

This pushed consumers focusing on one mmo at a time due to them not caring to pay for another. Insert the birth of “World of Warcraft”. This game dived in and claimed reigns of the genre. Players where dragged in by its vast array of combat and social grouping systems plus its ever expanding nature of new game features and new material which left players with always having something different and fun to do.

Even on this day World of Warcraft runs the online gaming market. If you're going to pay for a title better off paying for the one that has the highest amount of content and players to chat to right? This was the kind of query that would have kickstarted off the new generation of payment models. Not paying for a thing!

The 1st Free MMO's started to arrive on the scene not soon after WoW stamped its mark on the pay to play market. At 1st these small under devolped tiny Free MMO's were judged as being poorly designed and a shadow compared to their pay to play brothers so were disregarded by the general gamer. For the most part this was a correct assumption.

However with everything pointing in the direction of failure these free MMO's started to move in the other direction. Raking in huge amounts of players from all over the world and lead to a new payment option, the micro-transaction. In a nut shell Free MMO's are for the most part free however hiding within these little money spinners usually contains an in game store.

These stores can be used to aquire all types of trinkets for your gaming experience. From items to help you level faster or clothing to make you stand out from your friends, this kind of money venture started to do just that and developers were seeing huge amounts of income from gamers.

Now we are starting to see the larger companies take on the area of Free MMO's with big title MMO's such as Lord of the Rings Online, Star Trek Online and Conan all making the change from pay to play (P2P) to free to play. And that's just 3 to name, there are endless amount to decide from and with the extra bonus that they are free you can test them all till you find out which you enjoy without having to pay for a thing!
